Four years ago, Jamie sat in her car sobbing. She could not believe she was parked at an abortion center about to kill her own child. This was against everything she believed in. Through the crack in her window, she heard a voice offering help, a free ultrasound, resources that might change her mind. She came to the Cities4life volunteer who was speaking, still convulsed with sorrow. The other Cities4Life counselors on the sidewalk that day smiled at her, encouraging her that it would be ok.
Her situation was certainly difficult. An abusive husband who was an alcoholic. A mother just diagnosed with cancer and undergoing brutal chemo treatments. Her job just terminated because of her pregnancy. She didn’t want to abort…but what else could she do?
As always, we shared the Gospel and tangible resources. Jamie calmed as we offered solutions to all that she faced. She chose LIFE. Cities4Life helped connect her with resources to fight the job termination, a baby shower through Truth and Mercy Prolife Ministries to provide two full years of baby needs, and provided a sounding board/friend to help her in dealing with the entanglement with the abusive husband.
Miraculously, Jamie’s life began to transform. She divorced the toxic, destructive man. Her mother was healed. She found a great new job. And the baby, who was due on Christmas Day, she named Gabriel. Her angel. An incredible blessing. She met a man who loved her and her children, married her, and together they bought their first house this past summer.
Throughout it all, I have remained in touch with Jamie, and I have had the joy of watching her life transform as she continued to seek God’s will even when life seemed impossible. As her life blossomed, she began counseling others who were within her sphere of influence. She talked them out of abortion, sharing her story. Recently, she helped a pregnant work friend choose life, and then called us. The woman had nothing. Could we help her? We coordinated again with Sheryl Chandler’s incredible baby shower ministry, Truth and Mercy Prolife Ministries, and Jamie’s friend received a lavish shower. Jamie attended and even transported the van full of baby supplies to her new home to store them while her friend was in housing transition.
On the same day of the shower, Jamie agreed to speak in front of 2,000 people at the LoveLife Charlotte Prayer march in front of the very abortion clinic she had gone to four years ago. She had never spoken to a crowd remotely like this. She said she was terrified. She thought she might faint as we waited to step on to the stage. But it didn’t matter. She would do it. If her story could save one unborn child and conflicted mom, she would do it.
As Jamie and I walked back from her incredible, inspiring speech to a spellbound crowd, we passed groups of “pro-choice” activists. Jamie stopped to speak to each one.
“My name is Jamie. I came here four years ago to abort my child. If you all had been here, preventing the Cities4Life people from getting me their information, my child that I love more than life itself would be dead.”
“We are glad you could exercise your choice,” they said.
“You are not hearing me. If you had been there doing what you are doing now, I would not have known of that other choice, the choices they offered that saved my baby. And what about the choice of the baby?”
They turned their backs to her and crossed their arms.
“You have no answer, do you?” she asked.
Four years ago, Jamie responded to a voice calling out to her… a voice offering the hope and help of Jesus and tangible resources through Cities4Life Ministry. Jamie, choosing LIFE and Jesus, then used her one voice to tell others her story. The ripples of that single voice proclaiming life extended far beyond what she ever imagined. Two thousand people praying for the end of abortion heard her voice, the women she encouraged to choose life over abortion heard her voice, and those who supported a woman’s choice to kill an unborn baby heard her voice.
A boat cutting a narrow path in the middle of a wide lake can send ripples that radiate in all directions, reaching distant shores long after the boat has passed. The waves that are created crashing on those unseen shorelines can penetrate and erode the hardest clay banks.
You never know the power of one voice speaking truth.
