Sacrificing Her Birthday That They Could Have One

 |

To be an effective sidewalk ministry in front of an abortion center, Cities4Life utilizes fantastic volunteers who counsel abortion-minded moms with the hope of the Gospel and tangible help. A critical part of our team is the ultrasound nurse/sonographer aboard the Monroe HELP Pregnancy Center RV parked in front of the abortion center. Our two ministries work closely together for the common goal of life. The mobile ultrasound almost always convinces the mom to choose life for her precious baby. That’s what makes this partnership so important.

Today, our nurse Courtney was celebrating her birthday. Within minutes, the first of two young women who were strongly abortion-minded and facing difficult circumstances stopped to speak with our counselors. Both were convicted to come on the RV. Courtney, the wife of Cities4Life director, Daniel Parks, finished the first session and was packing up to leave. She had a special birthday lunch planned.

As she was telling us her plans, which would be capped later that afternoon with a well-deserved nap,  a second mother stopped to talk to another of our counselors. She said she had prayed that God would send someone to convince her that she could raise her child. If not, she would abort.

The RV was being readied to leave and head back to Monroe. Courtney sprinted to the driver and told him that another mom needed to come on and see her baby. As Courtney again prepared the RV for the ultrasound, the rest of us flocked around the young lady.

“When she asked me if I was here for an abortion…I realized, oh my, that is what I am here to do…” the young lady said. She looked stricken.

One by one, the five of us counselors hugged the young lady as she poured out a woeful tale of being abandoned and alone in this. We assured her, she was not alone anymore.

Courtney canceled her birthday lunch. She knew she wouldn’t have time for that coveted birthday nap either. The session stretched into the afternoon but ended well. The second woman, like the first, chose life.

It is not easy to be a counselor on the sidewalk of the busiest abortion center in the Southeast. It often involves sacrifice and stepping outside our comfort zone. Nonetheless, there is nothing that compares with seeing women who feel there is no hope and no answer outside of death turn instead to LIFE.

Two babies will be celebrating their birth days because Courtney gave up hers. Happy Birthday, Courtney! We hope you picture many tiny voices joining ours in love and gratitude.
