Reaching an Abortion-determined Teen; the Body of Christ working together

 |

Through a series of rather miraculous connections, a pregnant teenager from the other side of the continent contacted me. She was strongly abortion determined, terrified, and yet willing to talk with me. For almost 2 weeks now, I have been texting her.  We text several times a day, every day. Her story is miraculous, and I hope to be able to share it one day.

However, the specifics of her story are not the focus of this article. As I walked through this very difficult journey with her, I was reminded again of some very important principles of God’s people standing for God on the front lines of spiritual battles.

Principle Number One:

All glory and all power and all strength and all miracles are the province of God, not me.

When the young lady first called me, I was completely overwhelmed with the impossibility of what she faced. The fact that she was clear across the country where I had no contacts, no resources, and no local help that I personally knew of was daunting. I don’t even know why she contacted me given that she was as fiercely abortion determined as anyone I had ever counseled. There is no way I would be able in my power to help her. I knew that any positive ending to this story was of God. How He was going to use me, I had no idea. I admit to a shaky faith, wondering if the God who always comes through for me would prevail in this impossible situation. Again, I will not give details yet, but He did.

Principle Number Two:

We were never meant to fight spiritual battles alone.

“Where two or more are gathered in my name there will I be in the midst of them.“

My personal inclination is to rely on myself… and God… if I get in trouble. This is a prideful and spiritually incorrect position to hold.

God has repeatedly been showing me that I was never meant to travel alone in ministry. He has continually brought amazing and critical people at just the right time to help bring about miracles in the spiritual battles I face as a sidewalk Counselor on the front lines of abortion centers.

The turning point in my work with this abortion determined mother came about directly through the intervention of others at just the right moment. The wife of our director agreed to talk to this young mom and share her own experiences which were very similar to what this woman faced. This was the first of many tangible expressions of the love of Jesus from Christians to a complete stranger.

A church offered to sponsor a mom who was struggling between the choice of life or death for her baby. They told me I could offer that to the mom I was counseling. She was astonished by that offer in the Love of Jesus.

Our own C4L director, Daniel Parks, was sitting with me in our office when the young lady asked a question that was so Important in her choice that I knew I could not answer it without wise counsel. Daniel provided me with the perfect words, and the next evening it led to this young woman submitting her life to Jesus.

The overwhelming obstacle to this young woman was fear of telling her parents. One of my fellow Sidewalk Counselors, Angela, offered to fly me out with her to help me speak to the parents ourselves. She offered to help raise money since this was a cost I just did not have the funds to incur.

We still don’t know if the young mom will let us do that, but we are in the process of trying to raise the funds and be ready to leave at a moment’s notice. Several humble, loving Christians have already offered to help with that financial burden.

Principle Number Three:

The determined persistence of a team of people who love the Lord and are empowered by Him is hard to resist.

For the first week of my interactions with this teen, I had very little hope. So many people who knew of the situation encouraged me and told me, “Don’t give up.“ Their encouragement and offers of help were invaluable through those dark, dark days when I was certain I was having no effect.

Even during the first phone call which happened while I was on the sidewalk in front of the Abortion center, my team did not go home while I was pacing the sidewalk talking with the woman. They stayed almost an hour after the usual time we go home In blistering heat. They did not want to leave me alone. The thought of that devotion to each other and to me brings tears to my eyes.

In the end, at least thus far, the young lady Chose Life!, submitted her life to Jesus, and is weighing her options now. Local resources in her area and our resources are all in place ready to help her no matter what happens. This was all the result of scores of dedicated, loving Christians putting their funds, their advice, and their time into serving God and uplifting each other.

This is the church in action and when the church rises up, miracles abound.

Cities4Life really is an extension of the body of Christ. Jesus calls His church to be His hands and feet. That’s what we seek to be. Whether it be reaching an abortion-minded teen thousands of miles away or our typical outreach bringing hope to the local abortion centers, we are committed to proclaiming the Gospel and saving lives.
