Cities4Life is, has always been, and will always be a Gospel-centered ministry. The proclamation of the Gospel must be the driving force behind any organization that calls itself Christian. If a ministry neglects to share the good news of Jesus Christ then it becomes just another humanitarian relief organization and no longer a ministry. Of course humanitarian efforts are important and we praise God for every organization that reaches out to alleviate human suffering, however, if we are only concerned with people’s physical needs and fail to meet their most pressing needs which are spiritual then we do them and most importantly our Lord a disservice.
You see it doesn’t have to be an either/or and that’s why we are so grateful to be a part of what that Lord is doing through Cities4Life. We’re at the local abortion centers as a Gospel witness and to bring tangible support to families in crisis. There’s a quote floating around that is attributed to a few different preachers and theologians, most notably Frances of Assisi, that says “Preach the Gospel at all times. When necessary, use words!” It’s debatable whether or not he or anyone actually said this but the sentiment is clear “We preach the Gospel through our actions more than our words.” The truth is though that you have to use words to preach the Gospel. The Gospel is the “Good NEWS” about what Jesus Christ accomplished through His life, death, burial, and resurrection. News must be broadcasted and communicated with words for it to be received. So by God’s grace, we just try to do both, broadcast the Good News through clearly presenting the Gospel and meet practical needs.
So what does the Gospel sound like at an abortion clinic? Well, it sounds the same as anywhere else, it’s no different preached at abortion clinic than when you’re presenting it to a close friend who is lost or if it’s being preached from a pulpit. It’s the simple truth that Jesus Christ died for our sins, that He was buried and on the third day He rose again and if you’ll put your faith in Him you can have assurance that you are saved from the penalty of your sins and that you belong to God. The Apostle Paul in Romans 1:16 says “I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes…” As a ministry, we see the power of God (the Gospel) at work every day changing hearts and saving lives and of course, we see the practical needs of those we encounter met by loving Christians who want to be a part of proclaiming and displaying the Gospel to these families.
Recently Jennifer (a Cities4Life volunteer and a H.E.L.P. ultrasound nurse) and I had the opportunity to minister to a young lady that had chosen life with twins a few years ago. Sadly she lost the babies that she saved at the abortion clinic through tragic circumstances. It was a difficult time for her but even in the midst of all of that with all of the questions of why she had the assurance that the Lord loved and cared for her because the Gospel had changed her life. Since losing those precious babies she had gotten married and became pregnant again, this time not even considering abortion. This new family had some financial struggles and needed some help. Thankfully they knew they could reach out to the folks they met that day in front of the abortion center. Through a partner ministry called “White House Green Door” (a ministry which Jennifer started) financial aid was given. But this mom didn’t just need financial help she also needed some discipleship and encouragement from God’s word because she was still carrying some of the brokenness from losing her twins. Jennifer gave her a much needed Bible and I was able to give her some biblical counsel on how to deal with the grief of losing her babies and how to hold tightly to the Lord through the things that life in a fallen world brings. She left that day encouraged and confident that the Lord is good and that He is for her good. When I say it’s a privilege to be a part of what the Lord is doing at the local abortion centers, I mean it. To see her countenance change from worry and confusion to confidence and faith was amazing.
